[edit] V4L2UCP

This convenient tool allows easy configuration and adjustment of video devices in Ubuntu. Just install by running:

  • sudo apt-get install v4l2ucp

Then open a terminal, run the command and you will obtain a complete set of configuration options for your video device. By default, the video source selected is 'video0'. In order to choose another device, add a new parameter with a different device number:

  • v4l2ucp /dev/video(x)

You can find available video devices in your operating system by running:

  • ls /dev/video*

[edit] VGA2USB Epiphan Installation

VGA2USB Epiphan video grabber installation and configuration in Ubuntu and Isabel:

1. Identify your Ubuntu version running the command 'cat /etc/issue'. We tried Ubuntu 10.04 for this guide.

2. identify your linux kernel version, by running 'uname -r'. We used 2.6.32-25-generic.

3. Download the required grabber driver at: Epiphan download site, that matches your kernel version. In case the required kernel is not available, you can contact Epiphan support to obtain the appropriate driver at info(at)epiphan.com

4. Decompress the driver package to a new folder. In a terminal window, get to the folder with the 'cd' command. Once inside, run the command 'sudo make load', in order to install the driver into the system. You should obtain the following or similar output:

  • /sbin/modprobe videodev
  • /sbin/modprobe usbvideo
  • /sbin/insmod vga2usb.ko

Pay attention to any different output message since it may show an installation error or kernel version mismatch.

5. Connect the vga2usb device to the Isabel computer and to the vga source computer. Ensure the vga source is enabled with the appropriate key combination or graphic card feature.

6. Open Isabel application and open Administration -> Video sources window. Click on the VGA tab and then on the dropdown list. You should see at the available sources the Epiphan VGA device.

7. If you are not able to find the vga device, goto Isabel components and reset the video component. Once again, ensure the vga signal source is enabled at the vga source computer.

8. Be careful not to select the same video source at Isabel in both video and vga tab, since one of them will not work.

[edit] Isabel v5 Beta

[edit] No video available selecting a new video source

This behaviour may occur when selecting a different video source from video options. It will require to restart video component, or press the "Detect cameras" button to get the correct video on screen.

  • NOTE: Solved from version 4.12 beta 13.1

[edit] Selecting video source

If there is more than one video source detected by Isabel, when you select a different source on the Local Video camera options, you will see a "No video available" message on the video window. This behavior is because the new video source is currently in use by the Local VGA video. You should check that video device you wish to use as main local video is not in use by VGA video module.
