[edit] Introduction to the 1st Virtual Forum of Global Research Communities
This wiki coordinates the technical setup of the 1st Virtual Forum of Global Research Communities, which will bring together over the Internet (using Isabel) the EU e-Infrastructure Unit in Brussels with institutions in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America, with the aim of bringing awareness to non-EU countries on the coming FP7 CALLS, facilitate networking and above all increase their current participation in future EU projects. The Virtual Forum is a continuation of the very successful Global Info Day performed last 6th of March.
Isabel will be used to transform auditoriums in all those regions in local access points where interested researchers can participate interactively in the Virtual Forum. To set up a remote site follow the instructions for participation. The following sites have confirmed participation.
The Virtual Forum will have two sessions to adapt to time differences with the target regions. The Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific session will start at 10h00 Brussels time and the Europe and Latin America session at 16h00 Brussels time.
The event will also be streamed at the Isabel Plaza, as well as at RedIris.
[edit] Instructions for participation
If you plan to set up an Isabel site please do as follows:
- Send a notification email to Juan Quemada, Abel Carril and Jaime Mejia (by clicking here), indicating the name of your institution, town and country where it is located, as well as the name, email and telefone of both, the organisational contact of your site dealing with administrative issues and the technical contact encharged of Isabel set up and test.
- Install an Isabel PC following these instructions.
- We recommend to install Isabel on hard disk, specially in sites having to make a Powerpoint presentation in the Virtual Forum.New!
- Update to the latest Isabel version (4.10 r0-19) New!, instructions here.New!
- Connect a room or auditorium for interactive participation over Isabel following the guidelines for setting up a room or auditorium.
- Participate in the tests as scheduled by the technical coordinators for your region. A more detailed testing plan for each region will be published here soon.

[edit] Test Schedule
Forum participants shall set up and test the Isabel platform as follows:
- Install Isabel and perform local tests using the Local Test command.
- Connect to the region session server (Africa/Asia-Pacific: mcu1.dit.upm.es; Latin America: mcu3.dit.upm.es) for testing connectivity over the Internet. mcu1.dit.upm.es and mcu3.dit.upm.es will be always on from the 26th of June till the Virtual Forum.
- Before the 4th of July and when your Isabel PC installation is ready or when you need support, arrange an end-to-end Isabel test with the technical coordinators of your area where your installation will be thoroughly checked and certified.
- In order to arrange a test with coordinators, please send an e-mail to Abel Carril and Jaime Mejia (by clicking here)
- Participate in the preparation workshop on the 4th of July: it will have the same schedule, Africa / Asia-Pacific: 10:00 – 12:45 Brussels time (or 8:00 – 10:45 UTC/GMT) (Check your local starting time here.) and Latin America: 16:00 – 18:45 Brussels time (or 14:00 – 16:45 UTC/GMT) (Check your local starting time here.) and will act as a final platform test. The workshop will be used also to train sites in the use of Isabel and will have two parts:
- Isabel tunning, set up and training (first hour). Juan Quemada and technical coordinators.
- Rehearsal of remote presentations of networking session (second hour). By all participants.
- Additional tests and problem solving with technical coordinators of your area in between the two workshops if needed.
- Tunning workshop on the 11th of July: will have the same schedule as the Virtual Forum, Africa / Asia-Pacific: 10:00 – 12:45 Brussels time (or 8:00 – 10:45 UTC/GMT) (Check your local starting time here.); Latin America: 16:00 – 18:45 Brussels time (or 14:00 – 16:45 UTC/GMT) (Check your local starting time here.). It should be made from the final auditorium and with the final configuration. The workshop will act as the absolutely final tunning and test before the event.
- 12th of July: 1st Virtual Forum of Global Research Communities. Participants must connect to the Virtual Forum one hour before the start.
